Golf: Stage One PGA Tour Qualifying returns to Dayton Valley this week

Stage One PGA Tour Qualifying returns to Dayton Valley Golf and Country Club Wednesday through Saturday.

Dayton first hosted the Q-school tournament in 1995, and the 2009 event continues the longest consecutive streak of hosting a PGA Tour qualifying event for any course in the nation, at 15 years.

The 72-hole tournament is free to the public. Tee-times begin at approximately 9 a.m. off the first and 10th tees each day, barring possible frost delays.

A field of 71 players, from 16 states and five foreign countries, is entered for the event. Approximately one third of the field has previously played in a Q-school tournament at Dayton Valley.

Notables include Dayton 2007 co-medalists Seung-su Han and Tyrone Van Aswegen, 2005 medalist Ben Portie, 2000 medalist Jeremy Anderson and Jason Allen and Mike Pearson, co-holders of the tournament and course 18-hole record of 10-under par 62 set in 2003. Veteran Chris Kamin will be making his 10th appearance in the Dayton Q-school.

The Arnold Palmer-designed Dayton Valley course is one of 13 sites in the United States hosting 72-hole Stage One Qualifiers during the month of October.

An to-be-determined number of players will advance to Stage Two Qualifying from the Dayton tournament (in 2008 the number was the low 23 scores and ties).

Those players with qualifying low scores and ties set by the PGA Tour will advance to 72-hole Stage Two qualifying tournaments at six sites on Nov. 18-21.

The Final Qualifying Stage will be contested over 108-holes from Dec. 2-7 at Bear Lakes Country Club, Lakes and Links Courses, in West Palm Beach, Fla. The low scores and ties (exact number yet to be determined) will earn PGA Tour playing privileges. All players reaching the finals earn exempt or non-exempt playing status on the Nationwide Tour.

Last year Marc Lawless of Aptos, Calif. was the low qualifier with a 22-under par, 266 total that tied the 72-hole Dayton Q-school record set in 2003 by Jim Rutledge.

Twenty-four players advanced to the second stage from the field of 77 with a two-way tie for the 23rd and final spot at 7-under.

Players of note who have played and advanced from the Dayton field in prior years include Rod Pampling, Charlie Wi, Parker McLachlin, Chez Reavie, Jeff Overton, Charley Hoffman, Bob May, Steve Allan, Notah Begay, and Casey Martin.

History Making - Moore’s Wyndham Victory One to Remember

Ryan Moore’s victory in the Wyndham Championship on Sunday will be one to remember not just by Moore but by golfing fans as well. In beating Jason Bohn and Kevin Stadler in a playoff on Sunday to take him his first PGA Tour trophy, Ryan Moore became the first person to win a PGA Tournament without a sponsor since Phil Mickelson won the Northern Telecom Open in 1991 as an amateur.

It’s a pretty interesting fact as word was out on Phil Mickelson during his amateur career. Mickelson was talked about and discussed as a potential great player well before he took home the Northern Telecom trophy in 1991. Ryan Moore? No such discussions ever took place regarding Moore when he turned pro in 2005, but that wasn’t because of Moore.

Moore had one of the greatest single years in golf amateur history in 2004 when he won the U.S. Amateur, the Western Amateur, the U.S. Amateur Public Links and the NCAA Championship. Even with those accomplishments, Moore didn’t find a sponsor when he turned pro in 2005.

He almost certainly will find a sponsor now as the Wyndham Championship victory comes on the heels of a 10th place finish in the 2009 U.S. Open. Then again, Moore hasn’t been as consistent as most sponsors would expect him to be. During his first 16 tournaments in 2009, Moore made the cut only 8 times. Until his fantastic finish in the U.S. Open this year, Moore was pretty much an afterthought to most golfing fans but since that U.S. Open finish, Moore has been doing very well.

He missed the cut in the Buick Open, but he finished 4th in the Traveler’s Championship, 11th in the AT&T National, 34th in the John Deere Classic and now comes the victory in the Wyndham Championship.

Could this be a sign that sponsors are ready to finally jump on board a slowly increasing in speed Ryan Moore bandwagon?

I believe so. If such well sponsored golfers like Anthony Kim and Adam Scott continue to disappoint, sponsors will have no choice but look to guys like the 26 year old Ryan Moore to help them sell products. Moore’s phone could be ringing off the hook as I write this.

Hey, Ryan, I live in L.A. Lookin’ for an agent?

In any case, Moore’s accomplishment is quite impressive. Not only is he the first golfer to win a PGA Tournament without a sponsor since Phil Mickelson did so in 1991, he’s only the 5th golfer to do so in the history of the PGA.

That’s a short list and Moore should be proud of the fact that he is on it.

Golf Betting-YE Yang Tops Tiger Woods for PGA Betting Victory

Courtesy of a miraculous chip in at #14 and a cool and calm nature that most cannot show when paired with Tiger Woods on a Sunday in the final pairing, little known Korean golfer, YE Yang captured the 2009 PGA golf betting Championship at Hazeltine.

Woods, a sizeable +165 favorite coming into the event was lined as high as -400 before the final day started to capture the title coming into Sunday’s PGA golf betting affair. He had never lost a major in which he had led after 54 holes.

Online Sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.COM gives more information on Tiger woods.

But Yang would not be denied. He had erased the two-shot deficit through nine holes, and proved that he could stand shot for shot with arguably the greatest golfer of all-time. Yang had an opportunity to put Woods down on the 17th hole, but after watching Tiger bogey from a similar line, Yang’s par put lipped out and he had to settle for a bogey of his own. He responded with a fantastic approach shot on the 18th. Tiger found the rough on his approach, and Yang was able to finish the deal with a birdie.

Woods was shutout from winning a major tournament in 2009.

Golf Betting – PGA Championship Preview

How do you spice up betting on the PGA Championship, which some golf betting fans consider the ugly duckling of the four majors? How about making the host course, Hazeltine, longer than any track in major championship history? With three 600-plus yard holes and a 518-yard par four, Hazeltine clocks in at a mammoth 7,678 yards. Who are the top names to consider at your sportsbook this week?

TIGER WOODS (+150)

BOOM: There’s oh-so-much to like about Tiger’s golf betting odds this week. Not only has he won two straight tournaments, he’s done so on courses that favor long hitters. Hazeltine is thus a perfect fit for him.

BUST: There’s no reason to avoid Tiger unless you’re bored with the limited return he gives you on your money.

PHIL MICKELSON (+2000)

BOOM: An aggressive player like Lefty Mickelson could flourish at Hazeltine. If he hits an errant drive on a 600-yard hole, he can still get on in regulation.

Sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com currently has the betting odds .

BUST: After his hiatus, he really sputtered on the weekend at last week’s Bridgestone and was clearly fatigued. It’s hard to imagine him being back up to speed just a week later.

Golf Betting:Reno-Tahoe Open

Last week brought incredibly entertaining golf from all spheres of the game. Tiger roared back with a very menacing win as the men's game approaches the year's final major. My favourite winner last week was Catriona Matthew, who lifted the women's British Open Golf Betting.

It was a great display of intestinal fortitude on the back nine and she thoroughly deserved her moment in the spotlight. If last week was hectic then this week is pretty much the opposite. Naturally all eyes will be on the Bridgestone Invitational but I will be trying to find a juicy winner at the less glamorous Tahoe Open.

The Course

Montreux Golf Betting and Country Club is the host venue for this event and it has been since the inception of the tournament back in 1999. This is one of Jack Nicklaus' designs and he has said that he rates this course as one of his top five. It certainly is a picturesque setting with virtually the whole course being surrounded by forest and lakes. At 7,472 yards it is playing a bit longer than it has done in recent years but don't let the length concern you as the ball really flies through the air here. There are quite a few risk/reward holes on this track so you may want to look towards the type of player who will take a chance to put himself ahead of the pack.

Golf Betting–Bridgestone Invitational Preview

It’s almost time for NFL Football Betting odds to take center stage in our betting lives, but golf still has a few more interesting events to explore at the sportsbook this summer. One of them is this week’s Bridgestone Invitational, a World Golf Championship tournament that features a star-studded field. Let’s review a few hot picks.

Tiger Woods (+150 to win)

Why he will win: It’s more like “how could he not win?” Tiger has won the Bridgestone six times, all in the last 10 years, and he’s fresh off a win at the Buick Open last week. He’s the perfect combination of good history, strong recent play, and general awesomeness.

Phil Mickelson (+1600 to win)

Why he could win: Phil has the length off the tee needed to succeed at Firestone Country Club, the host course. He’s played decently this season too, with top-10s in half his starts, so he’s due.

Golf Betting-Bridgestone Picks

There’s plenty of things going on in the sports betting world nowadays. The UFC 101 odds are posted for the upcoming mixed martial arts event this Saturday, baseball is in full swing, NFL preseason betting is about to get started and the NASCAR Sprint Cup is heading to Watkins Glen.

Tomorrow, the World Betting Championships will take place at Firestone as Tiger Woods looks to continue his hot streak. Woods won rather easily last week at the Buick Open and considering how well Firestone and the PGA Championship set up for him, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him win three weeks straight.

Let’s take a look at some picks for this week:

Tiger Woods

Hard to argue with betting Tiger Woods to win the tournament this week, after all, he’s won six previous times at Firestone. His last win came in 2007 but the man is on fire right now. All fart jokes aside, he’s a solid pick this week - even at the ridiculously low odds of +150.

Lee Westwood

You can probably expect Lee Westwood to put forth a pretty good effort this week. As far as his game is going right now, Westwood has Top 10 finishes in his last three starts so he hasn’t been far off the pace. Considering he tied for second last year, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get to the top spot in this tournament. The stars seem to be aligned for him.

Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson will be a popular betting pick this week but you have to think that he might have some rust on his game. Mickelson hasn’t played since the U.S. Open and he’s probably going to need some time to find his stroke. Stay away from him this week as there are smarter plays available to you.

Hunter Mahan

Hunter Mahan was one of the hottest golfers around for a while until he completely missed the cut at the British Open, which surprised many bettors. He’s taken some time off to clear his head, though, and this will be his first tournament since that time. Look for Mahan to have a much better effort - his price per head has gone way up to +3000, which is good value for a guy who has played exceptionally well this year.

Golf Betting-Rich Pickings In Reno

The Legends Reno-Tahoe Open is the traditional side dish to this week's WGC event at Firestone and a very interesting event it is in its own right.

While Tiger Woods rather showboated his way to victory in the Buick last week as those in behind failed to land a serious blow, this is a real chance for one of the lesser lights to make a name for himself and grab a PGA Tour title.

That has been borne out in past results with five first-time winners lifting the trophy and four players (five wins overall) being in their 20s.

The first player to catch the eye at 80/1 is Spencer Levin, who fits both of the above criteria for a starter.

Formerly a top amateur, he finished a superb T13 at the 2004 US Open while still in the unpaid ranks and has since progressed gradually until making his full time bow on the PGA Tour this season.

It has been a pleasing start to boot with four top 25s so far in 2009, including a best of T7 in Milwaukee during Golf Betting Open Championship week where he closed with a personal best of 63.

What makes Levin of additional interest are his close links to the Reno area - he was born in Sacremento just across the stateline in California, a mere 111 miles away.

Levin is sure to have plenty of local support behind him and in turn he will be keen to do well in return - his California connections cemented by the fact that his middle name Joseph came from Joe Montana, the legendary San Franciso 49ers quarterback.

The tournament begins Thursday at Montreux Golf & Country Club on the edge of the Sierra Nevada southwest of Reno.

Levin has shown more than enough to be competitive this week, has some course form (T27 back in 2005) and his short hitting (183rd in driving distance in 2009) will be negated to some extent with the 7500-yard course being at altitude.

Golf Betting:Woods' excellence drives TV ratings for Buick Open

Top-ranked Tiger Woods' three-stroke victory in Sunday's Buick Open yielded a 167 percent rise in the television rating from last year's tournament.

CBS Sports officials said Monday the overnight rating for the PGA Tour event in Grand Blanc Township, Mich., was 4.0, up from a 1.5 rating for last year's tournament — when Woods was recovering from knee surgery and did not play.

It was the highest final-round rating for the Buick Open since it received a 4.3 in 2006, another tournament Woods won.

Golf Betting-Eye Of The Tiger

With the PGA Championship about two weeks away, Tiger Woods warmed up the right way winning the Buick Open.

Tiger is the odds-on to win the PGA Championship at +125.

Golf Betting-Lowery Shines with 63

Steve Lowery took an early lead at the Buick Open in Michigan.

American Lowery posted an opening round of 63 at the par-72, 7,127-yard Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc to lead the early wave of starters.

Lowery's nine-under score was one better than that of Australian John Senden, who shot a 64.

Senden's compatriot James Nitties and South Korea's Y E Yang carded 65s.

Another Australian, Greg Chalmers, returned to the clubhouse with a six-under 66, as did American Paul Goydos, while two more Australians, Marc Leishman and Rod Pampling, as well as South African Rory Sabbatini, joined Americans Tom Byrum, Tom Pernice Jr, Chris Stroud and Jay Williamson at five under, four shots behind Lowery.

World number nine Jim Furyk, the only other top-10 ranked Golf Betting player in the field, shot a three-under 69, as did Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden and US Open runner-up David Duval, who is looking to make his first cut since that Bethpage Black finish in mid-June.

Scotland's Martin Laird finished at one under following a 71.
South Korea’s YE Yang and Australia’s James Nitties were one shot further back.

“It hasn’t been a great year for me but hopefully I can turn it around,” said Lowery, who has not had a top-20 finish this season.

Scotland's Martin Laird finished at one under following a 71.

Golf Betting–It’s the Tiger Show at Warwick Hills

If Tiger Woods were a football betting option, he’d be New England: regardless of what else is going on, chances are they’re the best wagering choice. Woods headlines the Buick Open at Warwick Hills this weekend, and the two-time winner should be at the top of the list of favorites for this event.

Golf Betting – Thursday, August 30

Woods should be the favorite now that defending winner Kenny Perry isn’t in the field…oh wait, that wouldn’t have mattered. The world’s No.1 has won this event in 2002 and 2006, and he’ll be loaded with motivation after missing the cut in a major for only the second time in his professional career at the British Open. That was his first time outside the top 10 all year, and now that some are asking, “what’s wrong with Tiger?”, expect a big performance from Woods.

The First Round Leader at Turnberry? Watson, My Dear! Watson!

One of the most celebrated clichés of all time is, “History repeats itself.” There’s a reason, of course, why a cliché is a cliché. It’s because it’s usually true.

That’s the first thought that came to my mind after watching Tom Watson jump to the top of the leader board after the first round of the 2009 British Open. Tom Watson and Turnberry. Sound familiar?

It should because Tom Watson is once again tearing it up at Turnberry!

Watson tied for second after one round in the 3rd PGA Major of the year with a -5. How good was Tom on Thursday? Good enough to take a 6 shot lead over Tiger Woods, the best player in the world and biggest favorite to win the British Open Golf Betting since butter was favored over lard to go onto toast.

It’s all brought back memories of 1977 when our dear Watson battled it out against that generation’s El Tigre, the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus. Labelled “The Opens of Opens”, Watson and Nicklaus shot identical scores for the 1st three rounds - - 68,70 and 65 - - to set up one of the most, if not the most, anticipated final round in a Major in golf history. With two birdies during the first four holes to gain the lead, Nicklaus looked like he was on his way to victory, but Watson evened the score by scoring two birdies himself before the Bear drained a 25 footer on the 12th hole.

It wasn’t until the 15th hole that Watson took control of the Duel. The shot was an absolute thing of beauty, a 60 footer from just off of the green that almost melted its way to the hole. With the shot, Watson tied Nicklaus. Then, on the 17th, Watson took the lead with a birdie. The Bear had a chance to tie with a downhill four foot putt, but failed to get it done, but the Bear wouldn’t be subdued for long.

He roared back with a birdie on the 18th to force Watson to make a 2 ½ ft putt on the green for the championship. With the Open tied, Watson set up, eyes glazed over, hands seemingly trembling, feet shaking above the soft grass. He pulled back, hit the ball and watched as it rolled into the cup.

The Duel ended, the cheers erupted and the two brilliant warriors, a word like respect not able to describe it, walked off the green together, arms around each other’s shoulders.

When: Thursday-Sunday, July 16-19
Where: Turnberry's Ailsa Course, Scotland
Yardage/Par: 7,204 yards; par 70
2008 champion: Padraig Harrington
TV: Thu., Fri. 7 a.m.-7 p.m. ET on TNT;
Sat. 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. ET on ABC;

Golf Betting Report-RBC Canadian Open

The British Open is in everybody’s rearview mirror as the PGA returns to North America this week for the RBC Canadian Open.

Contested at the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, the RBC Canadian, for a purse of $5,100,000, will give some of the also rans in the British Open a chance to regain some of their lost luster.

One of those also rans, Steve Marino, actually had a shot to win the British Golf Betting but failed to close the deal. He, along with Camilo Villegas and Anthony Kim, will try to make amends in the RBC Canadian Open.

Let’s take a look at a few of the contenders to win the RBC Canadian Open.

Golf: RBC Canadian Open To Win

1. Mike Weir +1600 - - His British Open was downright painful to watch…if you had watched on Friday. On Thursday, Weir shot a 67 and was actually in the top ten of The Open. He’s played on Glen Abbey many, many times as he is a Canadian and he understands how to score on the Par 3s. The hometown boy is the pick.

2. Steve Marino +3000 - - Marino had 23 birdies in this tournament last year. That’s incredible. If he had just played par golf instead of getting a few bogeys, he might have won. He finished 3rd last year, had two great rounds in the British, and should be a force in this.

Golf Betting And Golf Tip:Learning How To Trust your Game

"Play your own game."

Almost everyone who is a student of the game has heard this piece of golfing advice. I often ask veteran golfers what "playing their game" means and they often respond that they aren't sure what it's supposed to mean, even though they have heard the concept mentioned for years! They intuitively know that the concept is important, but are relatively unsure how to create or produce a mindset for playing with trust and to believe in their talent.

Therefore, a main goal of mine is to help you understand this concept so that you can achieve your golfing potential. Let me explain the concept.
Playing Your Game: What does it mean?

Essentially, playing your game is an individual concept. It means that you play golf the only way that you know how to play. It is YOUR WAY. It means that you can't play like a Tiger Woods or Charles Howell III, no matter how diligent you work at your game or how many lessons you may take. But it does mean that you can maximize your athletic genius. The truth is, you have special qualities and attributes that are uniquely yours and no one else is quite like you. Your game is as individual as the fingerprints on your hands. Playing your game means that only you can pull off certain shots the way you perceive them. This is because only you can see a shot in your minds-eye, create it, and internally "know" if this shot fits your capabilities at that one, particular moment in time. It means you can only play with what you presently possess. Your golf game is based upon your experience level, style of play, attitude, physical and emotional characteristics, power, touch, and finesse'. You create your golf game and because you have taken the time to train yourself to play in certain way, you must also learn to trust your creation!

Golf Betting-Tom Watson lost But His Golf Sponsors won.

Tom Watson lost the playoff to Stewart Cink at Sunday's British Open. But the 59-year old golfer's stirring performance generated a publicity bonanza for his sponsors.

The big winner was Adams Golf which has had Watson under contract for a decade. Millions of sports fans watched Watson turn back time while wearing an Adams hat, playing Adams clubs and toting an Adams bag,

Titleist and Polo can't complain either. Watson played the Titleist Pro V1 ball. The nattily dressed golfer sported Polo sweaters at Turnberry .

"The exposure has been phenomenal," Adams Golf Betting chief executive Chip Brewer said. "All I've been doing all day is texting and emailing friends and business associates who were as excited about his performance as I am."

Golf Betting-Cink Wins British Open Golf Tournament

American Stuart Cink has emerged from a playoff to win his first major golf title, capturing the British Open in Turnberry, Scotland.

Cink and veteran compatriot Tom Watson were tied at two-under-par 268 at the end of regulation play Sunday. A four-hole aggregate playoff was set up when Cink made a dramatic birdie putt on the 18th hole. Watson's potentially winning putt rolled past the cup for a bogey. His consistent play then faded in the playoff, mired in bunkers and tall grass.

Watson stirred emotions of long-time golf fans by staying near or at the top of the leaderboard from the start. At age 59, the five-time British Open champion was trying to become the oldest player to win a major.

Golf Betting on the 2009 British Open

Tiger has been close in the two previous majors, and now he gets a shot at winning his first of the year when he tackles Turnberry.

As usual, all eyes will be on Tiger. Sports bettors have been loading up on Tiger action at their online sportsbooks.

Eldrick warmed up for the Open by taking the AT&T National at the Congressional a little over a week ago, defeating Hunter Mahan by a single shot.

Tiger won back-to-back British Opens in 2005 and 2006 but has failed to win the past two years; he missed last year’s event due to knee surgery.

Woods is always the odds-on favorite in the tournaments he takes part in and going into Thursday, the situation is no different as Tiger is listed at +225 at SPORTSBETTING (dot)com to add his fourth British Open title.

As mentioned, Hunter Mahan lost by a measly stroke to Tiger at the AT&T and while he has taken part in a number of Golf Betting tournaments in 2009, he has really shown improvement the last three.

Besides finishing as the runner-up to Tiger at the AT&T National, Mahan finished in sixth at the last major, the U.S. Open and fourth in the Travelers Championship; will he win his first event of the year? Mahan is listed at +3500.

While Tiger captured Open Championships in 2005 and 2006, another player stepped up to capture titles in 2007 and 2008—Ireland’s Padraig Harrington.

Harrington might have trouble repeating however as he has been horrendous this year.

While he won two majors and three events overall last year, Harrington has missed the cut in four out of his last five events and in the one event he made the cut in—The Players Championship—he finished out of contention in 49th.

The defending champ is listed at +2500 in this year’s event.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia is receiving some relatively favorable odds (+2000) but like Harrington hasn’t been too good in 2009 but he did finish a respectable 10th in the last major he attended, which was the U.S. Open.

Geoff Ogilvy has been a little inconsistent ever since winning the WGC: Accenture Match Play back in February, finishing as high as sixth and as low as 59th in his next eight tournaments.

Will he add the British Open this year? He’s listed at +4000.

Angel Cabrera finished 54th at the U.S. Open but he did get a cool green jacket when he won the Masters at Augusta National earlier in the year.

Can he wipe the bad taste out of his mouth brought on by his poor finish at Bethpage Black?

The 2009 Masters Odds champ is listed at +8000 to win the British Open.

When it comes to matchup betting, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson is a pair that draws attention, unfortunately, Mickeslon isn’t playing this week as he stays close to home to support his wife and mother in their battles with cancer.

However there is an interesting matchup bet at SPORTSBETTING(dot)com featuring the two golfers who have taken the last four British Opens.

In the matchup bet between Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington, Tiger is listed at -550 and Harrington is a big underdog at +400.

Who will take home the Claret Jug this year? We’ll know soon.

Golf-Ji Wins Open on Final Hole

Eun Hee Ji's fists extended into the air and she leapt into her caddie's arms, celebrating a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th green to win the U.S. Women's Open and entrench her name in golf history.

A few yards beyond Ji, Cristie Kerr crouched on the green. Kerr entered the day two strokes ahead of Ji as the favorite to win her second Open. But a difficult afternoon -- and a particularly forgettable back nine -- left Kerr watching Ji eclipse her on the leader board.

Ji's putt with Kerr helplessly looking on will remain the lasting memory of the 2009 Open at Saucon Valley Country Club. Kerr, who was the most consistent player of the tournament throughout the first three days, appeared every bit capable of winning the Open for the second time in three years.

Instead, it was Ji, a 23-year-old South Korean, who shot an even-par 71 for a four-day total of even-par 284. She did not hold the lead at any point in the tournament until her memorable final putt on the 72nd hole to avoid a playoff with Candie Kung, who shot a 69 on Sunday to stand alone in second place with 285. Kerr entered the day at 2 under par, but she shot a 75 to finish third, two shots back.

Tahoe Celebrity Golf Tourney

The celebrity golf championship celebrating its 20th anniversary at Lake Tahoe next weekend owes a lot of its success to baseball, and not just because ex-pitcher Rick Rhoden has won the event a record seven times.

"Dick Ebersol was the new CEO of NBC Sports and basically came and said, "We've got to find some programming to fill the void,''' said Jon Miller, NBC Sports executive vice president.

"We put together the first Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe in the summer of 1990 with 46 players and $400,000. Twenty years later, you can see where we are. It's been a tremendous success. It continues to get bigger every year,'' he said.

More than 70 golfers will be competing this year for the $600,000 purse and $100,000 winner's check at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship from July 17-19.

Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Charles Barkley, Dale Jarrett, Jason Kidd, Mario Lemieux, Marcus Allen, Ray Allen, Dan Marino, Lawrence Taylor and Emmitt Smith are among the annual fan favorites who will smack and hack their way around the 7,555-yard Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on the shores of the azure lake in the Sierra Nevada.

Woods Again Makes Final Round His Own

To keep Tiger Woods from reaching his stated goal, which this week was to be “the greedy host” at the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club, future guests will have to bring more than just their natural gifts. On a gray and unseasonably cool Sunday, Woods showed the golfers who sought to beat him that his own competitive fires burn white hot — guests or no guests.

To the two young stars who threw rounds of 62 at him — Anthony Kim in the first round and Hunter Mahan in the last — Woods’s response was a final-round 67 for a one-stroke victory over Mahan, 27, and a four-stroke win over Kim, 24. Nice try, kids, but not good enough.

And Michael Allen, thanks for coming. Allen, the 50-year-old winner of last month’s Senior P.G.A. Championship, began the day one stroke back, raising his own hopes and those of senior players everywhere. But he struggled early and shot 74 to finish tied for 11th.

Then, demonstrating his own resolve to his good friend Roger Federer, whose win at Wimbledon on Sunday was a record 15th Grand Slam men’s singles title, Woods sent a text message before teeing off that said: “Great going. Now it’s my turn.”

Woods, 33, was referring to Sunday’s victory, his 68th on the PGA Tour, which he cemented with a birdie at the 16th hole to slap away Mahan’s astounding final round. As for his own 15th Grand Slam title, that will have to wait at least two weeks until the British Open in Turnberry, Scotland.

Jamie Farr's LPGA Tourney In jeopardy For 2010

The Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic may be the next LPGA tournament to miss the cut.

The Farr, named for the actor who played a reluctant corporal on the classic TV series M.A.S.H., is being played for the 25th time — and possibly last — this week at Highland Meadows Golf Club in suburban Toledo.

"I don't know what the intricate details are, they'll have to figure those out," Jamie Farr said Wednesday before hurrying out to play the pro-am. "We have a 50-50 chance of being here next year."

The Farr's $1.4 million purse is among the smallest on the LPGA tour. In tough economic times, tournament officials have pared between $450,000 and $500,000 this year from an already bare-bones budget. The contract with the title sponsor expires after this tournament.

The LPGA had 34 events last year and that number is falling.

Organizers of the two-year-old Kapalua LPGA Classic in Hawaii announced Tuesday that financial problems would cause them to pull out of the last four years of their contract with the tour. LPGA officials threatened to pursue "legal remedies."

Savage still in hunt at club pro championship

Cortland Country Club head pro Eric Manning recorded his third consecutive solid round Tuesday in the PGA Professional National Championship in his attempt to return to the PGA Championship for the second straight year.

Manning added an even-par 71 to earlier rounds of 71-72 to stand tied for 36th place in the tournament being played at the Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M. At the end of Wednesday's final round, the top 20 players will earn berths in the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota. Manning stands only two strokes out of the top 20.

Last year, Manning achieved a lifelong goal of playing in a major championship by qualifying for the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills after finishing tied for 15th in the PPNC.

Another Central New York PGA member attempting to make it to Hazeltine is Kanon Valley assistant pro Kevin Savage.

He saw a beautiful start to his round Wednesday -- three birdies in the first seven holes -- get derailed by a string of bogeys, and he ended with a 77. That dropped him into a tie for 63rd. Savage was tied for second after a first-round 67 and tied for eighth after Monday's 73.

Still, he said a round in the 60's Wednesday would give him a chance to move back into the top 20. "I just have to go out there tomorrow and give it my best shot," said Savage, who had to receive a shot of a different sort just to compete this week.

During practice rounds, Savage, who has rheumatoid arthritis, suffered a flareup, causing his left hand to swell severely. It made it difficult to hold the club, and the night before the tournament he said he wasn't sure he would be able to play. He obtained some relief after his first round when doctors gave him a steroid shot to reduce the inflammation.

Golf-Travelers Notes: TPC a Relief

The numbers put up this week at the Travelers Championship were eye-popping.

Kenny Perry’s 22-under not only set a tournament record, but was one of the best scores in PGA Tour history and his four-day total of 258 was the fourth-best score in tour history.

Of the 72 finishers on Sunday, only Vaughn Taylor finished the tournament over par (3-over). Jerry Kelly and Marc Leishman finished at even par, with the others all in red numbers. The top 25 finishers were all double-digits under par.

There has been talk this week that the TPC River Highlands isn’t long enough to challenge today’s golfers. Add in the torrential rains that softened up the course and it was a birdie paradise in Cromwell. That’s fine with runner-up David Toms, who finished at 19-under in a tie with Paul Goydos.

“I would leave it,” Toms said when asked if the course should be altered. “If you look at years past when it got firm and fast with a breeze, the scores weren’t as low as they were this week. I love to play here, and I think that’s why they get a good field. Everybody likes to play here. Bombers like to play it, the short-hitters like to play it. I think it’s a golf course that anyone can do well on.”

Toms didn’t make the cut at the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black and his second-round 76 left him in a bad place when he arrived in Cromwell last Wednesday.

That made this week at the TPC River Highlands a kind of mental therapy for the field. Toms had his third second-place finish of the year and despite his low score, he felt that the course played fair. The sentiments were echoed by many of the players, some of whom are unable to compete at places like Bethpage Black.

“Last week at the U.S. Open, that just beat me up,” Toms said. “I had no chance to win that golf tournament, and if you looked at the leaderboard at the end, you could see the guys who were up there (were all long hitters). That’s not going to happen at this tournament. You might have guys who bomb it out there like Kenny does, but you have a lot of other guys that have a chance.”

While the low scores certainly will cause some to scoff, many of the golfers said that the weather conditions had more to do with the scoring than the layout. The water-logged course was soft in the fairways and slow on the greens. That had a consequence for golfers who hit the fairway.

Ryan Moore, who finished fourth at 17-under, likes the way it played. Not every course on tour has to be a crucible.

“It’s a position golf course,” Moore said. “It’s really a putting battle, especially when it’s soft like this.

“Everybody’s going to be shooting good golf scores and shooting 64 like I did today and barely move. That’s tough, knowing you gotta shoot a 61 or 62 to make any big jump.”

Perry Wins Travelers Championship With Record 258

There was no Masters-style meltdown Sunday for Kenny Perry.

Perry shot 63 to finish with a tournament-record 258 and win the Travelers Championship by three strokes over Paul Goydos and David Toms, two other golfers in their 40s.

The 48-year old Perry, whose bogey-bogey finish at Augusta kept him from winning the Masters in April, tied a course record with a 61 Thursday and led after each of the first two rounds here. But, he trailed by a stroke to Goydos heading into the final round.

He responded by shooting a 32 on the front nine and was up by five strokes heading to the par-4 15th.

Goydos, 45, made a 20-foot eagle putt from the fringe on 15 and birdied 16. But he missed his birdie putt on 17 to the right.

Perry birdied 15, and put the tournament away by making birdie on 17 after hitting a 164-yard approach to within 8 feet.

"Everyone kind of asks about the Augusta hangover deal," he said. "I guess I kind of shoved that aside a little bit. So that makes me feel pretty good."

Perry acknowledged he was thinking about the Masters as he played the back nine, and told himself to play aggressive.

"I knew that I had to keep making birdies," he said. "I wasn't going to let up. I wasn't going to play defensive golf. I learned something from that mistake."

Goydos said he felt he needed to shoot a 63 to win the tournament, but didn't start playing well until the 15th hole.

"I don't want to run and hide from that," he said. "He played like a guy who's won 14 times. I played more like a guy who's won twice, especially early in the round."

Goydos made a 40-foot putt on the seventh hole, but gave two shots back when he bogeyed the par-3 eighth. Perry hit his tee shot to within 3 feet of the pin, and made birdie.

Ridgewood And Plainfield To Host 2010,2011 events

The PGA Tour announced Wednesday that Ridgewood Country Club and Plainfield Country Club, both in New Jersey, will host the 2010 and 2011 The Barclays, respectively.

"New Jersey is honored that The Barclays will be staged in New Jersey at least two more years," said New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine. "We are fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with this event to make an impact across the state.

This gives the Garden State an opportunity to showcase what we have to offer to golf fans throughout the world, and represents a substantial economic boost and a genuine commitment to charitable organizations at a time when it?s needed the most." Ridgewood in Paramus, N.J., hosted the 2008 tournament won by Vijay Singh in a playoff over Sergio Garcia. "The Barclays at Ridgewood Country Club last year was a resounding success by all accounts," said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. "The players' enthusiastic response to the venue was unprecedented. Vijay Singh said it best during closing ceremonies when he called Ridgewood Country Club one of the best golf courses the TOUR has ever played.

"There are so many excellent courses in the New York and New Jersey area, and we are pleased to add one of the best, Plainfield Country Club, to The Barclays rotation," said Finchem. "As the first event in the PGA TOUR Playoffs, The Barclays is an important tournament for the PGA TOUR, and there's no doubt that Plainfield, who some would say is Donald Ross's best design, will provide a worthy challenge to the game?s best players in 2011." This year's tournament will be staged at Liberty National Golf Club in late August.

Andrade, Alfredsson lead CVS Charity Classic

Billy Andrade and Helen Alfredsson combined to shoot six-under 65 Monday to grab a one-stroke lead after the first of two rounds at the CVS Charity Classic.

Four teams share second place at minus-five at Rhode Island Country Club. They include Brad Adamonis and Brittany Lincicome, Brett Quigley and Dana Quigley, David Toms and Nick Price, and Boo Weekley and Chad Campbell.

There were a few changes to the original field as some players needed to finish the final round of the U.S. Open on Monday.

Prior to those changes, a couple coed teams were created and the leaders were one of them. Alfredsson being in the lead is the first time a female has led after one day.

Two teams share sixth place at four-under 67 - Davis Love III and Morgan Pressel along with Zach Johnson and Nick Watney. Two more teams share eighth at minus-two, while the final of the 10 teams are alone in 10th at minus-one.

US Open Odds

The Final Round of the US Open stats late in the day today (Sunday), with somebody named Ricky Jarvis looking like he will tee off with the lead. Tiger Woods likely won’t be a factor, but Phil Mickelson is in play and a blast from the past - David Duval - is in the mix as well, after dropping off the face of the golf world for the last several years. It’s good to see Duval back and having some success in a major.

As mentioned, Tiger appears to be too far back to play a significant role in how the final round plays out, which isn’t good news for the sports betting world, or at least a majority of the sports betting world, as Woods is always backed by a ton of money whenever he plays, particularly in a major.

Whoever threw some money down on Barnes, you’re either going to be cashing in for a nice payday, or cursing if he blows this lead (whcih was once as high as six strokes).

2009 US Open Tees Off In The Rain–Golf Betting-Tiger Woods Golf Odds

The US Open golfers scrambled today to change flight plans, as it doesn’t look like those who make the cut will be heading anywhere but back to the course on Monday morning.online sportsbook closed the betting window early Thursday morning for Day 1 of US Open betting, as the first players started their opening rounds. However, no one was destined to spend much time on the course, as rain poured down. Players were called off the course for the day, pushing everything back.

The golf odds that were put up heading into the big tournament obviously had Tiger Woods as the huge betting favorite, with Phil Mickelson number two. The sports betting world are anticipating a duel between the World’s #1 and #2 ranked players, and it still might develop. Neither player has had the chance to get going. Tiger is sitting at +1 after completing six holes and like most players I’m sure, was wishing he had an afternoon tee time and didn’t have to play in the rough weather conditions.

SPORTSBETTING.com oddsmakers stated that they took in a lot of Tiger Golf Betting action, as usual, but there was good steady volume on Mickelson to win the tournament as well. Late money also came in on Sergio Garcia and US standout Anthony Kim at the sportsbook.

Tiger Woods Odds: Tiger started to the tournament as a huge favorite to win it all at SPORTSBETTING.com. He was also -425 in his head-to-head matchup with Mickelson. The only two players that oddsmakers would put Tiger up against in matchups was Mickelson and Geoff Ogilvy.

Phil has yet to tee off, but will do so Friday morning.

More of the same, weather-wise, is expected over the next four days, which will almost assuredly result in the tournament being pushed into Monday and perhaps even Tuesday.

Playoffs aside, no US Open in 108 years has gone past a Monday morning finish. The odds are it will happen this year.

Tiger Woods, trying to defend his title, didn’t start the way he would have liked. His first tee shot was an ugly duck hook. But after missing the fairway WAY left, as he so often does, he saved par.

The US Open is just getting started. You can check SPORTSBETTING.com for all the updated golf odds and golf betting options throughout the tournament.

Enjoy the golf.

Barkley regrets not improving more for Haney

Charles Barkley gets golf tips wherever he goes, even the dry cleaners. He walks through the supermarket and they wish him luck.

"Little old ladies walking the street want to give me advice, and it makes me laugh," Barkley said. "Everybody gives me golf advice." Perhaps they are taking pity on him.

If everything we see and experience these days deserves its own pop culture reference, maybe nothing describes Barkley's golf swing better than George's critique of Elaine's dancing on "Seinfeld." "It's like a full-body dry heave set to music," said George.

Only Barkley's swing isn't set to music -- it's scored by the collective giggling and gasping of galleries across our golf-obsessed country.

Hands on his hips, Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon stood over a ball nestled deep in the rough and 120 yards from the hole.

Nothing much was riding on his next shot — just a national championship.

With one mighty hack, Burgoon gave Texas A&M its first national title in men's golf. His gap wedge soared into the wind, landed on the green and tracked toward the hole before coming to rest just 3 inches away.

"I couldn't have drawn it up any better," the senior said, a wide grin plastered across his tanned face. "This is better than any dream I ever had in my life."

Burgoon, the Aggies' No. 1 player, had lost the previous four holes to Arkansas' Andrew Landry before hitting from the deep rough far to the right of the 18th fairway.

Landry conceded the tap-in for birdie, then missed a 35-footer that finalized A&M's 3-and-2 victory.

Tiger Woods Still Leads Quail Hollow

After finishing Day 1 of the Quail Hollow Championship atop the leaderboard, the song remains the same for Tiger Woods so far in Day 2.

Woods is currently Even through Hole 6, still sitting at -7 overall for the tourney, good enough for No. 1 on the leaderboard.

Tiger has company however as Zach Johnson and George McNeill, who are both done for the day, also sit at -7.

Golf tournament to have a kids pro-am this year

The Travelers Championship in Connecticut is adding a pro-am for kids this year, giving 36 junior golfers a chance to play with the pros at the PGA Tour stop.

The kids from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts will earn a spot in the June 23 event by participating in charity fundraisers or by submitting a letter to the tournament director that explains why they should be selected.

Four players will be picked from those submitting letters. That's similar to the way PGA pros request exemptions into the actual tournament, which will be held in Cromwell at the TPC River Highlands course.

The pro-am is open to both boys and girls between ages 10 and 18. Those selected will play nine holes with the PGA Tour pros.

A Good Golf Swing, A Better Game?

Being confident, feeling sure, living life with an energy that surpasses all else, knowing ones self it's all better than having what just a good golf swing can give a golfer, you. You see a golf swing is just a golf swing good or bad if it's not "your golf swing". The term "finding my game" or "find your game" means just what it implies. Each individual has, on a golf course, his or her own game to find, and sadly, it won't be found in a club or a technique or even a strategy until you find "you" first! Until then a golf game is just a golf game and not "your game". It's all about originality and finding yours first. Note how I say you and your, why? Because everything that you do starts with you, who you are. You are the only one who can find it, like a finger print there is only 1 per person.

Being the best in golf or any other sport, endeavor, requires being in touch with nature in a way that few people will ever understand. A good golf swing is just a tool to help cultivate and find "the golf swing". It demands you to become more! A great golfer "FEELS" his or her way around a golf course. You can't see how to play golf. No fancy million dollar clubs or the best techniques and strategies will make you a great golfer unless you first get in touch with "the game". In order to master the game of golf you must become the game of golf right down from your very soul. Becoming one with nature is easy if you are receptive to it's offerings. Sadly most of us go through our whole lives and never find ourselves. you can only attain this finding through being harmonious (Existing together in harmony). Positive and negative energy, it's how we walk, talk, chew, live and play golf too, but to do it with precision and grace is to coexist without conflict.

Will Golf Gps Speed Up Golf?

The popularity of golf has grown exponentially over the past quarter century. People love the challenge, the lush outdoor experience and the company of congenial friends. But the pace of play has lagged far behind. Of course, one could say that the pace of play would naturally slow down due to the new crush of players. And that might be so, but golf as a recreation for the average person becomes less attractive as rounds become all day marathons. I believe that the introduction of the golf GPS, may help save the game.

In the old days (i.e. before Jack Nicklaus), folks played the game as a recreation not as much as a sport. You would carry your bag down the fairway, eye the shot, pull a club and fire away. It was a game of feel and not so much a game of ultimate accuracy. As with any game however, people soon became more concerned with score and comparing scores. Jack was one of the first touring pros to meticulously chart each course. He played for money and accuracy was money! So everyone joined in the fun; pros and amateurs alike started to take the game more seriously and marched off their distances. Today it is common; every course has 100 yard, 150 yard, and 200 yard markers in the fairway, or on the cart paths. Golfers pace off yardage like caddies to determine which club to select, and if you are an average golfer that becomes very difficult, since you tend to be off the fairway most of the time, and the markers are in the fairway. The new golf GPS can bring back the old days, and let you score your best.

Golf Swing Tempo - Is A Golf Fundamental

Without a doubt, golf swing tempo IS a fundamental of the golf swing. However, it would appear to be the most overlooked and underwritten about. What doesn't help, is that half of what I read on the subject is just nonsense anyway.

If I were a high handicapper, some of these articles would leave me more mystified about Swing Tempo than when I started them.
If you are a golfer, then I'm sure that it's safe to say, that if I were to ask you to write a list of the fundamentals of golf, you would probably hand me a list that included:
* Grip
* Posture

* Ball Position

* Alignment
Pre-swing Routine
...and you wouldn't be wrong. I'd be mightily impressed. I could take those fundamentals to the range with a bunch of books and magazines and work on them.
